What you need to qualify

Age

The minimum runs from 21 to 25 depending on your region (for example, New York State requires 25). The 25-and-older figure you may see is the top of the range, not a universal floor.

License & experience

A valid driver's license. A 1-year experience requirement applies only in some states (CA, HI, IL, MA, MN, OR, PA, VT), not nationwide.

Vehicle

A car with 4 doors and 5 to 8 seatbelts. The model-year requirement varies by city and state, and some regions require a vehicle inspection.

Documents

Driver's license, insurance, vehicle registration, and a valid SSN for the background check, plus an inspection form where required.

Background check

A criminal background check and driving-history review. It requires your consent and SSN, and it's not a credit check.

Requirements change often and vary by city. Always confirm the current rules on Lyft's official requirements page before you apply.

Lyft requirements FAQ

It depends on your region: the minimum ranges from 21 to 25, and New York State requires 25. The often-quoted '25 or older' is the high end of that range, not the national minimum.
